Industrial Inspection Robot ROI in 2026: Legged Robots vs. Drones

Robotics Reviewed Research DeskNovember 2, 2026Sources: manufacturer and reseller price pages, published case studies, and federal wage data

Our analysts gathered purchase prices for two legged inspection robots and three inspection drones, six published case studies with savings or payback figures, and May 2025 federal wage data for plant operators, to show what inspection robots cost and what they return as of Q4 2026.1

Key Findings

  • Legged inspection robots cost the most. Spot runs about $100,000 to $300,000 with payloads, and Petrobras paid about $667,000 per ANYmal X.
  • Drones cost far less to buy. A Flyability Elios 3 starts at about $82,000 in Europe, and a DJI Dock 3 with a Matrice 4TD drone sells for $26,412.
  • The fastest published paybacks come from avoided shutdowns. One finding at Vigier Ciment saved about $630,000 in shutdown costs, and ANYbotics reports that the ANYmal at an Equans offshore wind farm paid for itself in under eight months.
  • Drones pay back by removing scaffolding and confined-space entry. Returkraft saved €450,000 on one boiler inspection that otherwise needed about 2,000 hours of scaffolding and testing work.
  • Staffing one refinery inspection round around the clock costs about $545,000 a year with benefits, close to the price of one ANYmal X.

Inspection robots walk, crawl, or fly through plants to collect readings that people normally gather on foot: thermal images, gauge readings, gas levels, sound, and wall thickness. The two main types serve different jobs. Legged robots such as ANYbotics' ANYmal and Boston Dynamics' Spot run repeated routes through a plant, while drones such as Flyability's Elios 3 fly inside boilers, tanks, and condensers that would otherwise need scaffolding, and docked drones from companies such as Percepto patrol outdoor sites.

We used manufacturer, distributor, and reseller price pages, a CFO's public comments, six case studies published by ANYbotics and Flyability, and Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data. Euro prices were converted at the European Central Bank rate for October 30, 2026.12

In the following sections, we compare robot prices, published results, the cost of staffing an inspection round, and how the two add up.

What Inspection Robots Cost

Few inspection robot makers publish prices, so we used the figures that are public: a large customer order, a company executive's estimate, and list prices from distributors and resellers.

Key Findings

  • An ANYmal X cost Petrobras about $667,000 per unit in 2023, the highest price in this report. Petrobras bought six to run repetitive and hazardous inspection tasks on offshore production vessels.2
  • Boston Dynamics' CFO put Spot's base platform at about $100,000, rising to as much as $300,000 with added payloads.3
  • Drone prices are a fraction of legged robot prices. Even the confined-space Elios 3 costs less than a base Spot, and an outdoor dock and drone kit costs about a quarter of that.4,7

Published Results From Inspection Robots

The ROI figures available come from case studies that the robot makers published with their customers, so they show strong deployments, not a typical one. We list them as reported.

Published savings and payback from inspection robot deployments

Vigier Ciment, Péry, SwitzerlandANYmal (legged)$660,000 of shutdown costs and 127 hours of downtime avoided; 33,000+ inspections in 16 months8

Dominion Energy, Surry Power Plant, VirginiaElios 3 (drone)$150,000 saved; condenser inspection cut from 8 days to 8 hours11

Source: ANYbotics and Flyability case studies.8,9,10,11

Key Findings

  • Legged robots return the most when they catch a failure early. At Vigier Ciment, ANYmal found a cracked crusher foundation that needed about $30,000 of repair work, against about $630,000 in shutdown costs if it had failed.8
  • Two of the four ANYmal cases report payback in under a year, and all four involve sites where unplanned downtime or access is expensive.9
  • Drone savings come from a single inspection. Returkraft's traditional boiler inspection took 10 to 15 scaffolders a collective 1,700 hours, plus 300 hours of ultrasonic testing, and the Elios 3 finished its inspection in 8 hours.10

What It Costs to Staff an Inspection Round

The main cost a legged robot replaces is staff time on routine rounds. We used May 2025 mean hourly wages for the plant roles that usually walk those rounds, and added benefits using the federal estimate that wages make up 70% of total compensation.

Mean hourly wages for plant roles, May 2025
OccupationMean hourly wageWith benefits
Petroleum pump system operators, refinery operators, and gaugers$43.57$62.24
Power plant operators$47.97$68.53
Chemical plant and system operators$38.45$54.93
Industrial machinery mechanics$32.91$47.01
Inspectors, testers, sorters, samplers, and weighers$25.70$36.71

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 202513

Key Findings

  • A refinery operator earns a mean $43.57 an hour, or about $62.24 with benefits. Power plant operators earn more, at a mean $47.97.13
  • Covering one round around the clock takes 8,760 staffed hours a year, which costs about $545,000 at refinery wages with benefits.
  • A single daily 8-hour round costs about $129,000 a year with benefits, which is more than the price of a base Spot or an Elios 3.

Inspection Robot Price vs. Staffing Cost

Setting the yearly cost of a staffed round beside the one-time price of each robot shows where the payback math starts. It leaves out software, support, training, and the staff who plan missions and review the data, so it is the start of a business case, not the whole one.

Staffing costs use the May 2025 mean wage for refinery operators and assume wages are 70% of total compensation. Robot prices exclude software, support, and the staff who run the robots.

Key Findings

  • One year of around-the-clock refinery rounds costs about $545,000, compared with about $667,000 for an ANYmal X. A robot that takes over most routine rounds can cover its price in a little over a year on labor alone.
  • Spot with full payloads costs about $300,000, a little over two years of a daily staffed round. The robot still needs people to handle findings and repairs.
  • Drones are not built for daily rounds. Their payback comes from replacing scaffolding and shutdown time on large inspections, which is why the Returkraft and Dominion savings come from single jobs.

What Inspection Robot ROI Means for Plant Owners

Legged robots and drones answer different questions. A legged robot earns its price by walking routine rounds every day and catching failures early, so it fits plants with long routes, hazardous areas, and costly downtime. A drone earns its price on a few large inspections a year inside boilers, tanks, and condensers, where it replaces scaffolding and confined-space entry. Crawler robots such as those from Gecko Robotics cover a third job: wall-thickness readings on boilers, tanks, and pipelines.

The published results are strong, but they come from vendors' own case studies. Our reviews of ANYbotics, Flyability, Percepto, and Gecko Robotics cover each company's deployment record in more detail.

So if you are building a business case, start with the cost of one avoided shutdown and the hours of rounds or scaffolding the robot would replace, then ask the vendor for software, support, and payload costs in writing.

Methodology
We included inspection robots with a public price from the manufacturer, a customer order, a company executive, or a distributor or reseller listing. The ANYmal X price divides Petrobras' US$4 million order by six units. Euro prices were converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of $1.1172 per euro for October 30, 2026. Prices were not adjusted for inflation or local taxes. Results are reported as published in ANYbotics and Flyability case studies; we did not audit them. Staffing costs use May 2025 mean wages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and divide wages by 0.70, since wages and salaries made up 70% of private-industry compensation in June 2026.14 A 24/7 round is 8,760 staffed hours a year; a daily 8-hour round uses the mean annual wage of $90,630 for refinery operators. We calculated products, sums, and ratios from the published values.
