Who Karl Iagnemma is

Iagnemma has spent most of his career on autonomy, first in academia, then as a founder of a self-driving car company, and now running a warehouse robotics company.1

Robotic mobility research at MIT

Iagnemma directed the Robotic Mobility Group research laboratory at MIT for 10 years. There he met Daniel Theobald, a fellow MIT alumnus who later founded Vecna Robotics.1

NuTonomy and Motional

In 2013 Iagnemma and Emilio Frazzoli founded NuTonomy, a self-driving startup that Delphi, now Aptiv, bought four years later for $450 million. When Hyundai and Aptiv formed Motional in 2019, a $4 billion joint venture to commercialize autonomous vehicles, he took the top job. He left Motional in September 2024.1

Running Vecna Robotics

Iagnemma was an angel investor in Vecna in 2020 and became its chief executive in November 2024, when the company also announced a $14.5 million raise.1

A year later he told Automated Warehouse that revenue had doubled in his first year while Vecna shrank its headcount in a few areas, and that he had hired Rich Bohne, formerly of Fetch and Agility Robotics, as chief commercial officer. Vecna raised $31 million in September 2026.2,3
